Meeting Minutes
The July 11, 2007 meeting was called to order
at 7:05 p.m. at the Bonfire Grill at Litchfield.
President: Dale Steinborn
Vice President: Jim Orn
Treasurer: Tammy Winkels
Secretary: Rebecca Martinson
Chapter Rep: Wendy Steinborn
Sgt. at Arms: Al Salisbury, Joe Martin and Rich Winkels
Guest(s) were Mona Wehde, Breen Sundin and John Hawkins, VP of Sand Dunes
chapter. There were 25 members present in addition to all officers.
SECRETARY’S REPORT was read by Rebecca Martinson; motion made by Charlie to
accept the report, seconded by Andy, passed by hand vote.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Chapter Products by Tammy. T-shirts are $20 each for the long sleeved with $100
for set up for each design; we need to order 24 at least. After some discussion,
it was agreed to order just one design, with some in grey and some in black.
Todd Riba from the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, a federal level riders’
organization, talked about helmet and failure to yield laws. He suggested one
way to communicate with elected officials is to watch for them at community
events; approach them and let them know our concerns and priorities. MRF is
watching HR1076, which relates to insurance companies being allowed to deny
coverage based on “risky recreational activities.” Other concerns are new EPA
standards, catalytic converter requirements, etc., and the effect on custom bike
makers like “Jesse James” who have been fined by the California EPA. Meeting of
the Minds will be in Cedar Rapids in September and in Bloomington in 2009.
Frank also talked about a “planned stop” on Highway 90 to, in effect, catch
those on the way to Sturgis. Frank asked for anyone who gets stopped to get
complete information to him about the circumstances.
Gambling by Jim. Jim kind of combined his Gambling and VP reports. He let us
know about stops in St. Martin and St. Cloud where 69 people were cited. There
was a radio report on it, and it appears the same strike force was involved in
both places.
The Tri-County raffle has been moved to October 9, so our Toys for Kids won’t be
competing with them; a meeting regarding ABATE U is scheduled for July 17 in
Clear Lake. They are looking for suggestions for classes for next year.
Ways & Means by Dale. Next meeting is to be July 15 at the Ugly Bar in Montrose.
Membership and Retention by Dale. Next meeting July 22 at the Benson Bowler in
Benson; we still need a chapter rep on the Board of Directors.
State Rally by Dale. Next meeting is July 14. KLFD from Litchfield will have
live coverage at the rally; we still need a head front gate volunteer for 4
hours every day; tickets are $35 until the BoD, and $40 after that; sponsorships
are down, but there are new sponsors signing up.
Dial-a-Ride by Dale. Dale needs some help the last two weekends of July.
Joe Matter Scholarship Safety Riders Course by Artie. Nothing to report.
Buddy Bear Committee: Charlie and Mary Ardolf planned to drop the Bears on July
12.
PGR Riders by Galen. A mission had been completed in Sioux Falls without the
Kansas church members, who had reportedly planned to be there. He praised
Pawlenty, who attends many of these funerals, but doesn’t allow the media to
accompany him.
STATE REP REPORT by Wendy. Still need a Road Noise editor and website help. The
board of directors meeting is July 22.
VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT by Jim. Commingled with his Gambling report.
OLD BUSINESS: The Cones Sports Bar which had asked us for road guard help for
their opening forgot to put posters up. Dale and 8 road guards made the run, had
fun and still got a $150 contribution. They also delivered pictures to the Dial
a Ride sponsors on their way back.
Artie talked about the Ride for a Cure – there were 125 bikes participating and
lots of chapter representation. The Dial a Ride trailer went to St. James; South
Central participated with Lake Chapter in the Delano 4th of July parade; there
was a bike/child collision resulting in injury to Wendy at Litchfield.
We are planning on meeting for Darwin Days at noon at the funeral home on August
11; party afterwards at Westphals. Wendy still has tickets for Wisconsin.
NEW BUSINESS: A reminder that we will have our chapter meeting during the Rally.
Frank brought up whether the gate fees could be waived for someone who was just
coming in for the meeting. There was a question about cleanup before the Rally;
Dale said it should be clean, and there’s a question as to whether we’ll be
there after 2008.
OPEN DISCUSSION: Reminder about Ride to Work day on July 18; the Grounded Hogs
party being in Medina Ballroom on February 2, 2008; Monkey and Kathy have flyers
out for their party on August 18; and John from Sand Dunes has advance tickets
for their rodeo on August 25.
A motion was made by Lori to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Kat, passed by
hand vote. The meeting was adjourned.
